Massachusetts Solar
Massachusetts has always been a leader in solar power and community solar. They have committed to 100 percent renewable electricity by 2035, and 100 percent renewable energy by 2045.
New York Solar
New York state’s commitment to solar has to have the utilities produce 70 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2030 and calls for 100 percent carbon-free electricity generation by 2040.
Maryland Solar
Maryland will require the state to get half of its energy from renewable sources — such as wind and solar power — by 2030, and it will create a path in order to reach 100 percent renewable energy by 2040.
Maine Solar
Maine updated their renewable energy legislation in 2019. They have committed to running 80% of their power from renewable energy resources by 2030 and set a goal of 100% renewables by 2050.
Hawaii Solar
Hawaii passed the Community-Based Renewable Energy Program in 2015 and as of 2020, has moved into Phase Two allowing greater access to community solar projects. The state’s goal is reach 100% renewable energy by 2050.
Illinois Solar
Illinois currently ranks 35th in the country in solar power but they are poised to make an impactful change. They have committed to alternative energy, including wind, water, and solar energy. They have set out a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2050.
Minnesota Solar
Minnesota launched community solar in 2014 and today leads the nation in community solar capacity. Over half of the state’s electricity is generated from zero-carbon power and recent policies expect the state to achieve 100% carbon-free electricity by 2040.
Colorado Solar
Colorado initiated legislature in 2019 with goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase access for more and larger community solar projects, and establish a roadmap to 100% renewable electricity by 2040.
Vermont Solar
Vermont allocated $20 million to the state’s Clean Energy Development Fund to be used on projects such as community solar and solar energy farms. Vermont has goals for reducing emissions to 80% below 1990 levels by 2050.
New Mexico Solar
In 2021, New Mexico enacted the Community Solar Act, expanding access to solar power for those who can’t afford or can’t put solar panels on their roof or property. The state plans to move to all renewable energy resources by 2045.
Delaware Solar
Delaware approved Community Solar operations in 2010 but the development of projects has been slow. New legislation in 2021 has created incentives for new programs to help reach 100% renewable energy production by 2050.
New Jersey Solar
New Jersey’s Community Solar Energy Pilot Program began in 2019 and is becoming a permanent program in 2022. The state has plans for aggressive growth in solar capacity to reach its goal of 100% clean energy by 2050.
Oregon Solar
In 2016, Oregon Legislature passed the Clean Energy and Coal Transition Plan, paving the way for the launch of the state’s Community Solar Program in 2020. It is one of 22 states embracing the program and moving toward achieving 100% renewable energy by 2050.
New Hampshire Solar
New Hampshire established Group Net Metering in 2013 allowing Community Solar projects. While there are no long-term goals, the state has mandated that 25.2% of electricity be generated through renewable energy by 2025.
